Ask Golda! How Can I Exercise In A More Body Positive Way?

Hi there!

I’ve decided to do some vlogging! I’m answering questions that people asked me over on my facebook page. I think you’ll really dig it.

Here’s my first video. Be gentle with me. :)

  1. Absolutely! I often see people give up, because they aren’t losing weight and so they think it isn’t working. But it’s true – all forms of exercise have health benefits even if you don’t lose a pound – internally they all seem to come down to improved circulation or hormone function, and then there’s improved mobility/movement harmony, strength and joint function too. All exercise has a cardio-vascular component – the body doesn’t know the difference between cardio and not-cardio – it recognises intensity, rest, duration, rhythm, stillness, motion, things like that. Also I like to encourage people not to go back to the thing that hurt them – if “doing cardio” wasn’t good for you in the past, if it’s triggering, don’t go back to it. There’s no need at all. Do something else: yoga, dance, weightlifting, martial arts, some sort of skills development – and stop when it’s still fun! If you care about building up your capacity, that’s how you can do it – slowly over time, in increments you can handle – not by exhausting yourself so much you can’t even recover properly. And if you’re after a sense of enjoyment, of being with your body in motion, you don’t need to push it. You can just play.

  2. Hi Golda. This is excellent. Just wondering if you are aware of Curvy Yoga and Anna Guest Jelly. Her work may be right up your alley. Just since you didn’t mention yoga in the piece.
