Modeling A New Society

The other night, I was lying awake, pondering a great many things, including what I would write about in this week’s blog.

Eventually, I turned on the television, and there was a documentary about the gay liberation movement in the 1970’s. As I was watching, one of the commentators said something that I thought was nearly as applicable to the fat activist movement as it was to the gay liberation movement. To paraphrase, he said that two men or two women walking down the street, holding hands, being obvious lovers, was a revolutionary and symbolic act.

In other words, gay people were changing (and are changing) society just by being themselves in the public sphere.

Clients often ask me, after they begin the process of loving their bodies and releasing years of shame, what they can do to help other people do the same.

The best thing we can do, as fat activists, fat acceptance advocates, body acceptance advocates, etc. is to model what it is to be in love with our bodies. We need to “be the change we wish to see in the world,” as Gandhi said.

If you want more people to love how they look, then love how you look. If you want your friends to take walks with you, take walks and enjoy yourself. If you want your loved ones to have more confidence in their social interactions then have confidence in your social interactions. The more fun you have standing for what you want to see in the world, the more your actions will create an invitation to others to stand with you.

You don’t have to convince anyone to change. You only have to acknowledge, embrace, and enjoy the change in yourself.

As you can see, living your best life is not a selfish act. When you are able to love yourself, take care of your own needs and stand for who you want to be in the world and how you think the world should treat you, you invite others to do the same.

In other words, being happy and fat in public is a revolutionary act. Being a woman who loves her body no matter its size is a revolutionary act. Being a person who is not thin but decides not to diet is a revolutionary act.

The revolution needs you, right now, to embrace who you are and to do so in public. Are you with us? Whether you’re ready or not, I will keep standing for you.

I don't know, I can't do it when I'm thinking about it. I have to be happy about something else.
