Is it just me, or do you ever find being a fat advocate exhausting?

It’s not that I don’t believe in what I write here.  It’s not that I don’t appreciate the fact that it allows me to reach more and more of you each day.

It’s just that sometimes I get tired of fighting the entrenched system of fat hatred and diet culture that so many corporations spend so much time and money to keep in place.  I get tired of explaining myself to everyone from friends to family to former employers.  Sometimes I want to just give up and say, “You know what?  You’re right.  What’s the address of that Weight Watcher’s meeting again?”

Of course, I’m not going to do that.  I’m not going to stop writing this blog.  I’m not going to stop working with clients.  I’m not going to stop speaking out about the dangers of dieting and the problem of fat hatred.

But I’m writing this post to say, it’s okay if you don’t always feel like the fabulous fat advocate that you want to be all the time.  It’s okay if you miss an instance to speak up for yourself.  We all do it.  We all feel like there are times that we’re not completely in our power.  And I truly feel that, like with all things, the more we beat up on ourselves for the way we handled a situation, the more difficult it is to handle that situation better when the opportunity next arises.

I believe in being honest about this stuff, so if you know what I’m talking about, drop me a line in the comments and let me know if you’ve had this experience.

  1. Sometimes I just fall back on the Calpernia Adams saying when people confront her about being trans, “It’s not my job to educate you!” Because it’s not my job to educate the world 24/7. Even activists need a break and need to recognize when it’s worth fighting and when someone is just a douche to be ignored.

  2. Golda,

I am so happy you are expressing yourself on a website for me to view. I feel important and connected to the world because of your work. We matter and your voice is essential to this movement.

    Thank you.

  3. Hey Gorgeous….

I loved this blog entry. How freakin exhausting… I totally here you but I am so glad you do what you do. It’s such a slippery slope.. You are definitely speaking to so many of us with body image issues… and thank you. Trying to figure out how to repost this on facebook.

    1. @Jenn Burton, Thanks for that. I’m glad you’re digging my work and relating to how tough it is for all of us to keep fighting sometimes.

Oh, and to post it to facebook, just click the little F icon at the bottom of the post. It’s really easy.

  4. Hi Golda,
It’s exhausting and it’s so much easier to try and conform, but you have a unique message for a unique group of women and they need and want to hear you.

  5. Hi,
I agree with you, sometimes I get really tired and even think, you know what? I’m gonna start a diet tomorrow and follow the crowd. But I’m at a place that even when I super tired of being an advocate, this is so deep whitin me and that I just wait for these unpleasants thought to go away. But it’s hard sometimes, because It’s kinda lonely to try to find our own way to be in the world.
I’ts good to know that people like you and sites like More of me to love exist, otherwise things would be much harder! Thank you! :)
