December can be such an intense mix of stress and bliss. So let’s share some ideas for keeping your skin happy!

1) Drink More Water — When it’s hot out, it’s much easier to remember to drink water. So it’s important to remind yourself to stay hydrated, for your skin’s sake and yours! Herbal teas, water with lemon, and just plain old water are good choices.
2) Set Boundaries — This is the season for giving, but giving too much of yourself just leaves you feeling running down. For some tips on setting loving boundaries, click here.
3) Move Your Body — As much as possible, move your body with joy! Working up a sweat is great for you and your skin.

Plus, this month we have another opportunity for awesome Eucerin swag! Seriously, these prize packs just get better and better. Here’s all you have to do to be registered to win:

http://www.bodylovewellness.com

As I seem to mention a lot in these posts, I’m kind of weird. I love cold weather (I find it invigorating and energizing) and my skin doesn’t get very dried out.

But, I realize that I’m in the minority there. And as the weather turns colder, many of you probably experience a little more fatigue, and some seriously dry skin. And maybe just a little stress about the impending holidays?

So let’s talk tips for keeping your skin (and yourself) happy as the temperature drops.

1) Not So Hot — Although it’s tempting to use really hot water in the shower, it’s not so great for your skin. Using lukewarm water will allow your skin to retain more moisture and get less dry.
2) Get Your Rest — November is often a really busy time. Students are gearing up for finals. People in lots of professions are trying to finish things up before December holidays. But if you’re one of those people who always seems to get sick January 1st, it’s important to start taking care of yourself now. Schedule some relaxation, even if it’s just putting your feet up for 15 minutes and reading a book.
3) Notice Changes — I just switched to much more moisturizing facial cleanser and I’m so happy I did. Although, I’m not sure if I made the switch because of the weather or because I’m getting older. :)

I’m a little biased about October. It’s my favorite month of the year. Here in New York, October always signals cooler weather, changing leaves, and for me, my birthday! (Hi, Libras & Scorpios!)

But October is also a month about transitions, and transitions, though necessary, can be challenging for both mind and body.

Eucerin Smoothing Essentials Body Lotion & Calming Creme (Just Part Of The October Eucerin Giveaway)

One way to ease this transition for our minds is to feel gratitude. Take a moment to feel gratitude for shifts and changes. Feel gratitude for what was, what is, and what will be. Remind yourself that transitions and change are a necessary and wonderful part of life.

And for your body, take some time to notice how your body’s needs may have changed. As it gets colder, maybe you’re craving more soups and cooked vegetables. Maybe you need to rest a little more. Or maybe the cooler weather is energizing you and you want to move more.

We still have a few more weeks of summer, but it doesn’t really feel like it. School is starting up again, work is getting busier and busier.

Eucerin Smoothing Essentials Body Lotion & Hand Creme (Just Part Of The September Eucerin Giveaway)

And with all that is going on, it’s very easy to feel really stressed out!

When you’re under stress, you’re not really losing your mind, but in some ways, you’re losing your body. When you have a lot to think about and do, you may miss cues from your body. Stress can make you skip meals or overeat, not get enough sleep, drive somewhere that you might normally walk to. In essence, your body becomes the vehicle by which you do what you need to do, rather than something you honor and take care of.

Stress isn’t all bad. It sometimes give you that necessary burst of energy that you need to get stuff done. But when you’re under stress more than you want to be, it’s important to take a step back and de-stress. One of the best ways to do that is to reconnect with your body. Here’s one way to do it:

Take a lovely body lotion (like Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials Body Lotion) and massage it over every part of your body. Go really slowly, focusing on the feeling of your hands on your body. Focus on the sensations that you’re feeling, and if your mind starts to wander, come back to how your body feels. This is like a mini-vacation for your mind and a mini-massage for your body. Plus, your skin will feel amazing!

Let me know if you try this tip!

Plus, we have another opportunity for awesome Eucerin swag this month! Here’s all you have to do to be registered to win:

The winner will receive Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials Body Lotion and Hand Crème, a soothing TheraPearlTM eyemask, a eucalyptus and peppermint aromatherapy candle, a cotton terry bath pillow and a mini massager. (This stuff is really nice.)

Taking care of your skin in the summer often means doing what comes naturally this time of year.

1) Rest – When it’s hot out, it feels good to slow down. If you get some vacation time, try taking a siesta when the day is hottest, usually between 1PM and 3PM. Allow yourself to make time to take it easy, slow down, rest and sleep.
2) Add In Delicious Summer Fruit — Berries are a distinctively summer fruit, and aside from being delicious, they’re also great for your skin. Fruit like blueberries and raspberries contain anti-oxidants that protect and support skin health.
3) Sweat!– Sweating gets a bad rap, but it’s really good for you. It allows your skin to excrete the toxins and keeps you cool when the temperatures are high.

http://www.bodylovewellness.com

As I mentioned last month and the month before, I was approached by Eucerin to write a few posts about Spring/Summer skin and provide some swag to a few lucky readers (and, full disclosure, myself) and I thought it might be fun to give it a go!

Most of us know how important sun protection is, but what about Vitamin D? Vitamin D is an important nutrient for bone health, immunity, and cardiovascular health. So how do we take care of our skin and still get enough?

Truthfully, I’ve heard a lot of different things. It’s true that your skin uses UVB rays to create Vitamin D, but how much sun exposure you need can depend on a lot of things. So where do you start?

Eucerin Everyday Protection Face SPF 30 4oz (Part Of Prize Pack)

1) Get About 20 Minutes Of Sun, When You Can — Most experts say that 20 minutes or so of sun a few times a week is enough for most people to create enough Vitamin D.
2) Eat Vitamin D Rich Foods – Foods like fish, eggs, and fortified milk all contain Vitamin D, and can give you that extra boost when sun exposure isn’t enough.
3) Supplementation — My vitamin D levels tend to be really low, despite whatever sun exposure I get. So I usually take a sublingual Vitamin D. My favorite is from Biotics Research.

Me Wearing My Prize Pack Hat & Trying To Take A Picture Without Looking Like I'm Taking It

4) SPF Stuff Is Still Important! — Definitely use products with sunscreen or a good sunscreen on its own if you plan to be outside for long. And, if you’re interested in some SPF swag, might I recommend the following…

http://www.bodylovewellness.com

As I mentioned last month, I was approached by Eucerin to write a few posts about Spring/Summer skin and provide some swag to a few lucky readers (and, full disclosure, myself) and I thought it might be fun to give it a go!

Apparently, May is Skin Cancer Awareness month (which, truthfully, I wasn’t aware of until now). I also didn’t realize that skin cancer and melanoma account for about 50% of all cancers.

The good news is, skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and the great majority of the time it’s caused by excessive sun exposure.

So here are a few of my favorite ways to protect your skin from too much sun.

1) Hats! – I’m no fashionista, but I believe that hats aren’t just for Blossom enthusiasts and royal wedding attendees anymore. Hats are lovely for protecting your face and scalp from sun exposure, and they can look rather awesome.

2) Beach Umbrellas — Growing up near Jones Beach in Long Island, I always think of beach umbrellas as being excessively heavy things that you rent and schlep for miles. But apparently, they make lighter weight ones now! (I have my eye on this one.) I’ve always loved beach umbrellas because they give you some shade, protect your skin, and keep you a little cooler than the shadeless folks around you.

3) Stay In When The Sun’s The Strongest — This may not work for when you’re at work and you take lunch at 1PM like everyone else. But if you’re doing something summery and vacationy, like going to the beach or traipsing around town, why not take a tip from the Spanish and take a nice siesta in the middle of the day? It’s much more pleasant to be at the beach or checking out shops in the morning or evening anyway.

http://www.bodylovewellness.com

So, I was approached by Eucerin to write a few posts about Spring/Summer skin and provide some swag to a few lucky readers (and, full disclosure, myself) and I thought it might be fun to give it a go!

I pretty much don’t get that wintry dry skin that most people get, because I think I may have internal oil reserves that rival Alaska. But I know that for many of you, dry skin is an issue for most of the year. So let’s talk about some things that you can do from a nutrition/supplement perspective to support your skin this Spring.

1) Support Your Liver – In traditional Chinese Medicine, your liver kicks into high gear in Spring. That’s because your body is in the process of cleansing some of the old of Winter to make way for the new of Spring. A great way to support your liver in this process is to use milk thistle, a really gentle herb that supports the liver in doing all the myriad functions that it has. Milk thistle is also great for your skin because the more support your liver gets, the less hard your skin has to work to get rid of the gunk.

2) Add In Greens & Berries – Because I work from an intuitive eating/Health At Every Size perspective, I don’t like to tell anyone what to eat. That’s just not my bag. But I think it’s great to talk about health-supportive foods that we can consider when we’re asking our bodies what they really crave. And so, I think it’s great to consider adding in greens and/or berries. Greens are great for a gazillion reasons — they contain fiber which supports your liver and other organs in flushing out toxins, they de-acidify the blood, and they contain needed vitamins. Consider adding in lovely greens like kale, swiss chard, arugula and spinach to your meals, particularly if you like them! Also, berries are starting to ripen as we get into Spring. These contain fabulous phyto-chemicals, antioxidant vitamins, bioflavinoids and other nutrients that are great for supporting your body in feeling its best, which is also great for skin. Plus, they taste awesome, so they’re a really easy thing to add into what you’re eating already.

3) Drink Warm Water – As the weather gets warmer, we often seek out colder drinks. But drinking warm or hot water, just by itself, can be more hydrating to the body and support your lymph in moving more easily. Hydration and proper lymph movement are important for helping your body to feel good and your skin to look great. Experiment with drinking hot water with nothing in it and you might actually like it (like I do).

4) Move Joyously — Exercise for exercise’s sake is okay, but I like to move for fun. Moving your body with joy and pleasure gets your circulation flowing, let’s you sweat (which your skin just loves), and gets you in touch with the energy of this time of year, which is all about new beginnings and moving forward!

5) Enjoy The Weather – We look forward to the warmer weather for so long that it’s important to really enjoy when it comes! Make it a point to move some of your activities outside, from taking walks to picnics in the park, etc. And if you’re looking for protection from sunburn and protecting your skin for the long haul, Eucerin has some very cool products, like Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 15 Body and SPF 30 Face Lotion, which are great moisturizers that also provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Spring! All Winter long you look forward to it. You plan for it. “As soon as the weather gets warmer, I’m going to go to the park all the time/rearrange the furniture in my apartment/ get new clothes/ never watch television again, etc. etc. etc.”

Then Spring comes and you feel kind of off. Maybe you’ve got pollen allergies that knock you out. Maybe the weather shift feels weirder than you expected. Maybe you find yourself getting angry at people or situations that hadn’t bothered you before.

Both of these seemingly contrary effects are part of the energy of Spring. Spring is about newness, movement, and beginnings, but it’s also about clearing out the old as a way to transition into the new.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), springtime is the time when your liver is particularly activated. Although the liver has about a gazillion functions in the body and even more functions in terms of TCM, anyone who took high school biology could tell you that the liver helps to detoxify the body. When detoxification in the body goes into high gear, it can lead to both physical symptoms (digestive issues, skin issues, fatigue) and emotional symptoms (anger & sadness).

I know. It’s a bummer! So what do we do about it?

As a holistic health practitioner, I’m all about supporting the body rather than suppressing symptoms. So here are some great ways to support your body and mind to release that which it needs to release.

5 Ways To Support Your Transition Into Spring

1) Add In Healing Foods & Water — What foods to you associate with Spring? Chances are, those foods will support you and your liver. Baby greens and parsley help your body to cleanse and tonify. Citrus fruits are also cleansing and give you added immune support. Adding these fruits and vegetables to your meals and snacks can give your body the added boost it needs to transition in to the new season. In addition, drinking water at this detoxifying time of year is particularly important. If you don’t love drinking water (or even if you do) add some lemon juice and a little agave nectar to create a delicious and cleansing lemonade that you can drink all day.

2) Get Your Anger Out Of You –It may not always be a good idea to communicate your anger to others, but it’s not a good idea to keep it to yourself either. And, being that it’s Spring, writing in a journal about it might not be enough. Do what you can to move the anger out of your body. You can do this consciously by dancing and singing along to an angry song, adding some martial arts moves to your workout, or punching a pillow. (Warning, you may feel incredibly goofy doing any of those things, but trust me, it’s invigorating to physically move your anger.)

3) Try This Healing Herb — Milk thistle is one of my favorite herbs. It supports the liver in a very gentle way. Take it as a tea (available at every health food store), tincture, or supplement.

4) Wear More Colors — In the past, as a New Yorker, I had adopted the black and gray uniform. And while black and gray may seem solemn and energetically protective in Winter, once Spring rolls around it just feels terrible. Experiment with colors. Wear what you like. It can change your mood immensely.

5) Be Gentle With Yourself — Just because it’s Spring, you needn’t overwhelm yourself with all the things you had intended to do when Spring arrived. Take it easy. Enjoy the new season with all of your senses. Be gentle with yourself as if you were the tender bud of a soon-to-bloom flower.

As always, lay some comments on me and let me know how it goes!
