Recently, I was interviewed for an article about HAES(SM), and the interviewer asked, “What was your earliest experience with dieting?”

I felt a little funny telling her that I did my first diet when I was 4 years old. Even though I include that fact in my bio and I hear similar stories all day long in my practice, it still felt funny to say it.

My mom is a big Sophia Loren fan (as am I) so I figured I'd put up this lovely picture of her with her kid.

I actually remember quite a lot about that first diet. I don’t remember what I ate or how I went about it, but I remember telling my Mom that the kids at nursery school were calling me fat. After some discussion (I was a really talkative kid) we decided that I would go on some sort of diet, and I would get a gold star on the calendar every day that I stuck to it. After a certain number of gold stars accumulated, I would get a toy.

As you might imagine, I think that this set me up for a lot things that some of you may have experienced too. For years, I had underlying beliefs like: it’s important to focus on weight and food, it’s important to please people in order to get something (a toy, approval), I need to change how I look to be accepted, and in some ways, a belief that the bullies were right.

Maybe in reading this, you’re thinking, “I would never put my kid on a diet at such a young age.” And perhaps, you wouldn’t. But when I think about my Mom’s experience of life, how she was the chubby one among her thin siblings, how her Mom (my Grandmother) worried about her weight and my Mom’s weight, how she had gone through life thinking she was fat, starving herself to fit in, etc., then it doesn’t seem so weird. In fact, it makes perfect sense. My Mom was trying to avoid the pain that she had experienced as a fat kid.

Antique French Postcard (Graphics Fairy)

When I write in my gratitude journal, I often find myself writing about my Mom. I feel grateful to her for so many things, but I’ve also come to a place where I’m really grateful that she put me on that diet at age 4. That diet, and the diets that followed, were part of my journey to where I am now. I would never have been the anti-diet crusader, the fat activist, and the healer that I am today if I hadn’t gone through the intense torment of repeated dieting. I wouldn’t wish it on another kid, but I see that journey coming to fruition in the fat activists around me, and I think there will be legions more of us in the years to come since childhood obesity has become such a lightning rod issue (phony as it is).

I inherited so much from my Mom. I have her wavy hair, her love of learning, her zeal for social justice, her love of humor, her love of creature comforts and beautiful things. I know she blames herself for my inherited weight, even though I would love for her to let go of that. I think that would be a great Mother’s Day present to herself, even though my Mom hates Mother’s Day and thinks it’s a commercialized, fake holiday. (I guess my Mom’s hatred of fake holidays is another thing I inherited, though I solemnly and devoutly celebrate International No Diet Day every year (and every day, really).)

Antique Postcard (Graphics Fairy)

So here’s a tip for finding some healing from the guilt and blame cycle. Take a moment to picture your mom (or whomever was like a mom to you) in different stages of her life. Picture her as a young child, a preteen, a teenager, and a young adult. For each of these stages, ask yourself, “What were her dreams for her life? What were her fears and insecurities?” Doing this exercise may help you understand your mom a bit better.

It’s a good reminder that, as Louise Hay says, “our parents were doing the best they could with the understanding, awareness, and knowledge that they had” at the time. (And by the way, if you’re not there yet in acknowledging your parents’ journey, that’s okay too.)

Please share your insights in the comments section below.

Sometimes, getting what you want is the scariest thing in the world.

We all know what we want. We’re good at pining away for something. But then when it happens, we don’t always know how to handle it.

Say, for example, you’re single and you really want to be in a relationship. You think about the person you might want to be with, what qualities he or she should have, what he or she might look like, etc. And then… you become involved with someone, and it may not be like what you had expected. And then you end up with a whole new set of desires, like, you wish you could get this person to go out more, or stay home more, or appreciate goat cheese.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4686" title=""Song Of Creation" From The Triple Goddess Tarot.

Since I started my business, I had a desire that every woman who worked with me would experience big transformations in how she felt about herself and how she related to food. I want each of my clients to feel a new sense of power, love for their bodies, love for the food they eat, love for who they are and what they mean to the world. Not only that, I had a big desire for them to feel so good that they wanted to tell all of their friends. Those are some of my many business desires.

Until I started The Empress Club last year (my group coaching program), I had always worked with women one on one, so when their programs ended, I would get a lot of juicy feedback on how meaningful an experience it was for them, and sometimes it would feel a little overwhelming, but this lovely, emotional feedback would only be expressed to me a few times a month, at most. But this time around, as The Empress Club ended, I got a TON of gorgeous feedback about how the program was for the Empresses, and I got it ALL AT ONCE.

This is a great thing, right? And yet, I found myself judging myself for how I received it, almost like I was trying to push it away because I couldn’t handle it.

Again, I’m not saying that I don’t like getting positive feedback from my clients or that I’m not grateful for it — it’s the best thing in the world to know that what you do actually made a difference to someone. I’m just saying that sometimes getting what you want can knock you far enough out of your comfort zone that you’re not sure that you want it anymore.

Not feeling good about getting what you want can be a real issue. It can cause you to push away your desires because you feel not capable, undeserving, or even guilty for having them. So let’s look at 3 ways that you (and I) can deal with making room for more and more of our desires coming true.

1) Keep Track Of Your Desires — Sometimes, acknowledging our desires feels weird. Especially as women, we’re taught to compromise and quell our desires to keep the peace and not make waves. That is so not cool with me. It’s bad for you and it’s bad for the planet. So the way to start getting more of what you want is to acknowledge what you want. Keep an ongoing list of your desires. Allow yourself to fine tune them and add to this list. Knowing what you want makes it easier to allow yourself to have what you want.

2) Allow Room For Gratitude — I like to keep an ongoing gratitude list. I write, “I’m grateful for …” and I get specific. This allows me to digest all that I have and all that I receive. It gives me the space to really acknowledge the gratitude I feel when I can’t always express it in the moment of receiving it. After I write a few gratitudes, I take a few seconds (or minutes) to feel the gratitude for these things in my body. In a way, I see this as much like digesting food — when you’ve digested your food, you create space for more, right? So when I’ve digested the good things I’ve experienced, I also make room for more. That’s the power of this practice.

3) Affirm That You Can Handle It – Using the gratitude practice will help you make this affirmation feel more real, but it’s important to keep affirming to yourself that you can handle the fulfillment of your desires. For example, if you get a promotion at work (hopefully, with a monetary raise) and you’re feeling scared that you can’t handle it, you’ll want to affirm to yourself that “I’m great at my job” or “I’m great at my job and I can handle everything I need to do.” The power of this affirmation is that you will do better at your job, even if being great at your job means asking some colleagues for support in doing that better job. Affirmations like this allow the fulfillment of your desires to keep coming toward you.

Feel free to share some of your big desires in the comments section below!

So, I’m going to fulfill one of my desires right now, and that’s to share a bit of the feedback I got on The Empress Club from one of the participants.

Deciding to join The Empress Club was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was expecting to be able to relate better with my body, feel less self-conscious and break my relationship with diets, instead I got so much more! I have learned to be comfortable in my own skin, to feel real love for my body and embrace my emotions as a real part of myself, just as real as my arms or legs. Now, I walk around with confidence and embrace my own beauty, I get more compliments on daily basis, I enjoy my meals, I identify my hunger, I stop eating when I am full, and I finally stopped worrying about going on a diet again.

I’ve learned to deal with my emotional issues instead of eating on them, to be kind to my self, and above all to embrace and accept with love, the person that I was, I am, and will be. I finally feel like I am beautiful, and that I am at the right place in my life.

Whoa. Am I the only one that’s in shock that it’s 2011 already?

The older I get, the more I feel like time is just flying by. Sometimes I feel like there are so many good moments to enjoy and so many difficult ones to learn from and grow from, and yet, I can’t seem to slow down enough to really take stock.

That’s why, over the last few years, I’ve developed a very special New Year’s ritual, that grounds me in acceptance of what is and gives me clarity on what I want going forward.

Because I’m so committed to you getting the benefits of this ritual too, I’ve developed a free, easy-to-follow workbook so that you can do the ritual too!

Here are the basics:

First, I make a gratitude list of all the things I’m grateful for that happened in 2010. It’s my way of digesting the year and remembering the good (and tough situations) that have come my way.

Next, I make desire lists of all the things I want in 2011. I break this down into specific categories that I share with you in the workbook. This is my way of getting real clarity on my true desires, so that I can enjoy the process of manifesting them.

Then, last but not least, I list my intentions for 2011. These are the things that I’m committed to doing, changing and experiencing in 2011. These are different than the desire lists, and I explain that in the workbook.

This is an extremely powerful process for getting clarity about what you truly want in life and starting the process of manifesting it. So I encourage you to download the workbook now and get started!

While most magazines are scaring you about OMG HOLIDAY OVEREATING WEIGHT GAIN PANTS EXPLOSIONS OMG!!!! As you’ve probably guessed, I have a different way of viewing all of this.

There is often really delicious, awesome food at holiday gatherings. And, contrary to what we often hear and think about holiday food, great food is one of the awesome things about holidays, right? It’s part of the enjoyment, it’s part of the ritual. It’s a reminder that this time of year is special, and we honor it by making really special food.

There is nothing wrong with loving holiday food, but stressing about it feels terrible. So how do you let go of the holiday food stress so you can just enjoy the holiday?

Here’s what I recommend.

1) Breathe For Relaxation – Note that I didn’t actually write “deep breathing,” because this is a little different.

How Do You Do It? — When you’re feeling stressed out during the holidays, take a breath in through your nose, filling your lungs about two thirds of the way. Then hold it for about 5 seconds, and then breathe out.

Why Does It Work? — By breathing in and then holding your breath for a few seconds, your body gets the message that your blood pressure has gone up a bit, so it then dilates your blood vessels, lowering your blood pressure, increasing circulation, and giving you a feeling of relaxation. Also, by breathing in two thirds of the way, you’re not artificially exerting the body by taking a deep, totally lung filling breath. By relaxing your body, you help to destress your mind and body, allowing you to enjoy yourself and your food, and better digest it.

2) Savor Your Food – Holiday foods and special occasions really are special, so it feels good to get the full enjoyment from these wonderful foods.

How Do You Do It? — Rather than eating quickly, take time to enjoy your food with all of your available senses. Notice how it looks. Notice the delicious aromas. Notice the texture and the taste as the fork meets your mouth. Do this whether you’re eating sweet potatoes or turkey or salad or dessert.

Why Does It Work? — By savoring, you’re engaging your body and mind in the process of eating. Savoring stops the “Oh no. This is so many calories, isn’t it? Let’s see, I had the … and I haven’t been to the gym and I still want to have the…” conversation that causes so much stress. Savoring allows you to enjoy your food with your full attention. It also makes it easier to notice your hunger and fullness, because your mind and body are both aware of the eating process.

3) Feel Gratitude – Feeling gratitude for the holidays and your loved ones is like savoring the experience of the holidays themselves.

How Do You Do It? — When you start to feel stressed, take a moment to feel gratitude instead. Feel gratitude for whatever is enjoyable about the holidays — seeing your nephew play with a toy you picked out for him, spending time with a relative that you don’t usually see, taking a walk with your sister between dinner and dessert, having the day off from work. Just take a moment to feel grateful or appreciative for what you have.

Why Does It Work? — Feeling grateful puts you right into the present moment. You stop feeling guilty about overeating at lunch and worrying about traveling back the next day. You just experience, instead, what is, and see it from a place of appreciation, rather than stress.

Listen to the podcast here:

I hope you’ll try these tips and let me know how it goes in the comments section. By the way, most of what I suggested here only takes a few seconds or so and can be done anywhere at any time!

Also, if you want more support in having a happier, healthier holiday, you can get instant access to a recording of last week[...]</itunes:summary>
Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love Autumn, I love Thanksgiving foods, and I love the idea of remembering to be thankful for what I have.

Being thankful for what you have is really antithetical to so much of our normal experience. We’re constantly being reminded of scarcity. We get messages like — you can only eat x amount of calories and no more, you’re not pretty enough and so you need to buy these products, those Black Friday sales are ending soon and if you don’t go to the store at 4AM you’re missing out!

The message is — there isn’t enough, you’re not enough, and be very afraid!

Feeling grateful shifts this. Feeling grateful puts you in touch with all that you do have, right now. As a result, gratitude has an incredibly powerful effect.

When you feel negative about your body and how you look, you’re operating from a scarcity point of view. It’s as if there’s only so much beauty in the world, and you didn’t get enough of your share. You end up constantly trying to change your body (dieting, over-exercising, botox) to get a little more of this scarce resource, or else you feel like hiding so that no one sees your lack of attractiveness.

And that feeling of having a scarcity of beauty is also connected to an even deeper scarcity, a scarcity of self-love and self-approval.

So how can we shift this using the principles of gratitude?

It’s really very simple. It’s as simple as creating a list of what you’re grateful for about your body.

And yet, creating this list can feel really challenging. When you’re feeling negative about your body, connecting with your gratitude for its beauty (and even its amazing functionality) can be difficult. So I’m going to start you off with a gratitude list that I share in my book, Stop Dieting Now: 25 Reasons To Stop, 25 Ways To Heal:

1. I am grateful for my gorgeous body.

2. I am grateful for my strong legs.

3. I am grateful for my long hair.

4. I am grateful for my big, sturdy feet.

5. I am grateful for my soft skin.

6. I am grateful for the way the cut on my finger is healing.

7. I am grateful my curvaceous hips.

8. I am grateful for my kissable lips.

9. I am grateful for my bodacious booty.

10. I am grateful for the way my heart pumps blood so beautifully.

As you can see, some of these items aren’t things you might normally be grateful for. I wear size 11 shoes, for example, and it isn’t always easy to feel grateful for my “big, sturdy feet,” but at this point, I really do feel that. I can look at my feet and feel love and gratitude. I even feel it for my belly, for my carpal-tunnely hand, for my fine hair that is going grayer and grayer by the day (I color it, but maybe I won’t someday).

I didn’t get to this place of gratitude from continuing to brood over what I felt I was lacking. Instead, I found it through acknowledging and appreciating what I had. And I did that by creating lists like the one above.

So this Thanksgiving, be thankful for you, your body, your beauty. Make a list of at least 10 (the more, the better) things that you love about your body. As you write each one, feel the gratitude in your body, and see how it affects the way you feel about yourself.

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to anyone celebrating it, and a belated Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian readers!

Oh, Valentine’s Day. It does such a number on so many people. Whether you’re in a relationship and don’t know how to celebrate or you’re not in a relationship and nearly hallucinating a hoarde of happy couples wherever you go, Valentine’s Day can easily mess you up.

I remember one particularly heinous Valentine’s Day weekend back in 2006. Valentine’s Day was on a Tuesday, so it was as if the whole weekend beforehand were reserved for happy couples. I hadn’t had a date in a year. All of my friends were coupled off. I spent nearly the entire weekend at home, studying my Institute for Integrative Nutrition homework and reading a dreary 19th century novel. Those two things, in and of themselves, were not so bad, but from my perspective at the time, they felt like symptoms of my angst-ridden singleness.

Then, on Sunday afternoon of that never-ending weekend, my doorbell rang. I wrapped my shawl around my shoulders and went to the door.

At first, all I saw was a bouquet of roses. But there was my apartment building’s super, a tiny, sprightly octogenarian, bringing me flowers during my lonely Valentine’s Day weekend.

I’m not telling you this to say that if you’re feeling really lonely someone’s going to show up with a bouquet of flowers. Nor will I say that I wasn’t often creeped out by my super’s willingness to ignore a 50 year age difference, and later on, my boyfriend. But I will tell you that from that day on, I started acknowledging the fact that someone in my life had feelings for me. He might have been a head shorter and a half century older, but he dug me. And that was cool, and not another reason to think I was a dork. I decided to let that feeling of being admired sink into my bones and my bloodstream, and to know that there was more love and adoration coming my way.

After playing with this idea for about two months, I started getting way more dates from the same online dating sites that were yielding nothing a few months before.

Sometimes you just have to feel the love before it’s really there.

So, this week, if you’re feeling unloved, try this technique. Start thinking of all the people in your life who express their love for you (or even their “like” for you). Think about your friends who think you’re awesome, the guy at the deli who gives you a free cup of coffee now and again, your coworker who thinks your impressions are hilarious, family members who adore you, people in your life who might not be there now but who were important to you at one time, even your pets who freak out with happiness when you’re near. Write it all down if it feel right. Then notice if you find yourself feeling more loved. As always, let me know how it goes in the comments below.
