So for some reason, I’ve been writing a lot about my “no-poo” hair experiment lately. And now I’ve gone even deeper into this experiment, as I’ve begun doing something called water-only washing. In essence, I’ve completely stopped using any thing on my hair other than water, baking soda, eggs, and apple cider vinegar.

Big deal, right? It’s just hair. But by making this change, I’ve noticed some other things start to change as well.

Mostly, the way I’ve always treated my skin suddenly feels sort of harsh. Hot showers suddenly feel way to hot. The Neutrogena foaming face wash that I’ve used for years suddenly seems overly drying. The Body Shop body washes that I used to love just feel like they have one too many chemicals. Now that my scalp is being treated differently, the rest of my skin seems to be calling out for something different too. I’ve been playing around with the most natural soaps I can find, and using natural oils like jojoba and lovely essential oils as well.

I feel like my skin is calling on me to be more gentle with it, and I’m finding that the more I heed the call, the better my skin feels, and the better I feel. It’s like the old Hermetic, mystical saying, of “as above, so below” and “as within, so without.” The gentler I treat my skin, the more I seem to find gentleness within.

There is such a beauty in gentleness, and I think it’s a quality that we often forget. Who are we gentle with, other than babies, and maybe ourselves and others when we’re injured or quite ill? Wouldn’t it be beautiful if we could cultivate more gentleness in our everyday lives?

Imagine being gentle with yourself when you’re late for work. How might you feel differently or plan differently for next time? Imagine being gentle with yourself when you overeat at dinner. What might you learn from that experience, and how might you treat yourself later that night or the next day if you were gentler with yourself? What if you were gentler with your friends, your kids, your coworkers, your partners? How might things shift and change in your relationships and within you?

I see a strength in gentleness. It takes strength to be kind to yourself and others, to listen, to flow with what is rather than resent that what is isn’t what it should be. Cultivating gentleness, to me, doesn’t mean ignoring other, potentially less gentle emotions. It just means deciding, when possible, to go a little easier on ourselves and others than we might otherwise.

Does this concept of gentleness appeal to you? Is there a place in your life that is calling out for more gentleness? Let me know what you try and how it went on my facebook page!

I have a confession to make.

In the last few weeks, I’ve only shampooed my hair once (and that was actually kind of an accident).

Some of you are probably thinking, “That’s gross!” Some of you are probably thinking, “I’ve been there.” And some of you are thinking, “Golda’s gone no-poo!”

Actually, you’re all kind of right. I’ve decided to try out “no-pooing.” If you’re curious about this at all, I wrote a kind of extensive post about it here for Persephone Magazine. I decided to do it for a number of reasons, but mostly because it’s supposed to reset your scalp and make it less oily, my hair color will probably last longer, and it’s an environmentally friendly thing to do.

A "No-Poo" Exemplar? (Edgar Degas "Woman Washing", public domain)

I decided to do this on a whim, but not shampooing my hair has actually been weirdly difficult for me. I’ve been washing my hair every day since junior high, mostly because I was deathly afraid of having greasy hair. My hair is both oily and fine, so I washed it every day without fail because I thought it looked even finer when it wasn’t washed.

But when I really connect to the emotions behind this, I think it also had to do with the body hatred and the particularly awkward stage I went through in 6th grade. I was chronically unhappy with my body, and puberty was exacerbating all of that. I was dieting all the time and struggling to be thin (with very low levels of success), so I thought that at the very least I could have the best hair that I possibly could. Washing and styling my hair every day was something within my control. Having perfectly squeaky clean hair was both socially acceptable and a form of body denial. As Kate Harding and Marianne Kirby noted in Lessons From The Fatosphere, fat is such a charged word because it’s often meant to stand in for a variety of adjectives, including “smelly [and] undisciplined.” So it was important to me as a fat kid to be able to deny those other ascriptions.

Now more than 20 years later, I’ve let go of so many “have to’s” about my body, the biggest one being the idea that I have to lose weight before I can do, be and have a variety of things. I don’t see losing weight as a precondition to happiness anymore, which has been hugely transformative. And yet, I find it interesting when these other “have to’s” come up. Things like letting go of the “have to” of washing my hair every day has actually deepened my appreciation and approval of my body. I know that if I work through the resistance and let go of the “have to” big things happen. Sometimes the littlest action yield big results.

So I’d like to challenge you to let go of one of your appearance-related “have to’s.” This can be really challenging, so I would recommend trying it out for even half a day first. Just notice how you feel, what feels different, what fears come up. This can be really magical. And I’m not suggesting anything I haven’t tried myself. (And I know that for some of you, these things will not be challenging at all or are just part of your daily life, while for others this will be much more difficult.) Here are a couple of suggestions, just to start you off:

1) Go out wearing no makeup (or a lot less makeup than you usually do).
2) Try a no-poo option for a few days.
3) Go out without wearing a bra or with a much less constructed bra than usual.
4) Go “commando.”
5) Go much longer without shaving your legs or underarms.
6) Stop wearing deodorant.
7) Wear an outfit that is more form fitting than you’re used to.
8) Wear an outfit that is baggier/looser than you’re used to.
9) Wear an outfit that draws attention to a body part that you normally hide.
10) If you normally straighten you hair, try letting it be curly, or vice versa.

These relatively simple action steps can feel like a huge deal, but they can also yield big reward and be extremely freeing. Let me know what you try and how it went on my facebook page!

I’m bringing back and oldie and goodie this week. Enjoy!

I think many of us walk around with the feeling that we’re not measuring up in terms of having “healthy habits.” Consciously or not, we think that if we could just work out all day, eat “perfectly” (whatever that might mean for you), meditate consistently, etc., that we would be “in perfect health”, never get sick, be the “perfect” weight and have “perfect” lives.

Does this sound anything like you? If it does, then you probably also spend a good deal of time wishing you could be more perfect and feeling that you’re not. And that’s no way to live.

When you’ve spent as much time studying holistic health and nutrition as I have, then you encounter a lot of people who probably live as close to the ideal as possible. And let me tell you, they still get sick. They still get obsessive about food and health and exercise and meditation. They still have problems at work and get mad at their kids.

In other words, perfection ain’t so great.

One of my client’s is a novel writer with a day job as an administrative assistant. At least two nights a week, she finds herself staying up until two or three in the morning, working on her novel. She told me that she really wanted to change this habit, because she had read about how staying up late can throw off your cortisol levels and mess with blood sugar. She told me that after she stays up late to work on her novel, she still feels fine the next morning at work, often feeling more energized because she feels good for having worked on her book the night before. Yet, she was adamant about going to bed earlier. I worked with her on some relaxation techniques so that she could try going to bed at 11PM, even on those nights where she felt compelled to work on her novel.

At our next session, I asked her how her going to bed early had worked for her.

“Golda, it was terrible,” she told me. “Most of the time, I would stay in bed thinking about my novel until 2 or 3 in the morning, but not working on it. Once I was able to fall asleep at 11pm or so, but I still felt off the next day. I tried to write earlier in the day but it just wouldn’t flow. I haven’t made any progress on my book.” She paused and took a deep breath. “I think I’m just going to do my usual thing from now. I feel better that way anyway.”

That’s the thing about trying to be perfectly healthy. Sure, staying up too late all the time can mess with cortisol, but not staying up when she was dying to write was messing with her soul.

Health isn’t about being “perfect” with food or exercise or herbs. Health is about balancing those things with your desires. It’s about nourishing your spirit as well as your body.

If you want to change health-related habits, that’s fine, but do so without judgment. Let yourself balance your desire to be more healthful with your other desires and goals in life. Remember your real goal — it’s not perfection, it’s happiness.

Recently, I was interviewed for an article about HAES(SM), and the interviewer asked, “What was your earliest experience with dieting?”

I felt a little funny telling her that I did my first diet when I was 4 years old. Even though I include that fact in my bio and I hear similar stories all day long in my practice, it still felt funny to say it.

My mom is a big Sophia Loren fan (as am I) so I figured I'd put up this lovely picture of her with her kid.

I actually remember quite a lot about that first diet. I don’t remember what I ate or how I went about it, but I remember telling my Mom that the kids at nursery school were calling me fat. After some discussion (I was a really talkative kid) we decided that I would go on some sort of diet, and I would get a gold star on the calendar every day that I stuck to it. After a certain number of gold stars accumulated, I would get a toy.

As you might imagine, I think that this set me up for a lot things that some of you may have experienced too. For years, I had underlying beliefs like: it’s important to focus on weight and food, it’s important to please people in order to get something (a toy, approval), I need to change how I look to be accepted, and in some ways, a belief that the bullies were right.

Maybe in reading this, you’re thinking, “I would never put my kid on a diet at such a young age.” And perhaps, you wouldn’t. But when I think about my Mom’s experience of life, how she was the chubby one among her thin siblings, how her Mom (my Grandmother) worried about her weight and my Mom’s weight, how she had gone through life thinking she was fat, starving herself to fit in, etc., then it doesn’t seem so weird. In fact, it makes perfect sense. My Mom was trying to avoid the pain that she had experienced as a fat kid.

Antique French Postcard (Graphics Fairy)

When I write in my gratitude journal, I often find myself writing about my Mom. I feel grateful to her for so many things, but I’ve also come to a place where I’m really grateful that she put me on that diet at age 4. That diet, and the diets that followed, were part of my journey to where I am now. I would never have been the anti-diet crusader, the fat activist, and the healer that I am today if I hadn’t gone through the intense torment of repeated dieting. I wouldn’t wish it on another kid, but I see that journey coming to fruition in the fat activists around me, and I think there will be legions more of us in the years to come since childhood obesity has become such a lightning rod issue (phony as it is).

I inherited so much from my Mom. I have her wavy hair, her love of learning, her zeal for social justice, her love of humor, her love of creature comforts and beautiful things. I know she blames herself for my inherited weight, even though I would love for her to let go of that. I think that would be a great Mother’s Day present to herself, even though my Mom hates Mother’s Day and thinks it’s a commercialized, fake holiday. (I guess my Mom’s hatred of fake holidays is another thing I inherited, though I solemnly and devoutly celebrate International No Diet Day every year (and every day, really).)

Antique Postcard (Graphics Fairy)

So here’s a tip for finding some healing from the guilt and blame cycle. Take a moment to picture your mom (or whomever was like a mom to you) in different stages of her life. Picture her as a young child, a preteen, a teenager, and a young adult. For each of these stages, ask yourself, “What were her dreams for her life? What were her fears and insecurities?” Doing this exercise may help you understand your mom a bit better.

It’s a good reminder that, as Louise Hay says, “our parents were doing the best they could with the understanding, awareness, and knowledge that they had” at the time. (And by the way, if you’re not there yet in acknowledging your parents’ journey, that’s okay too.)

Please share your insights in the comments section below.

Al Pacino Trying To Keep His Pound Of Flesh as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice

The term “weight loss” must not have the same zing that it used to.

There’s a new euphemism that diet pushers are pushing, and that euphemism is “shedding pounds.”

The real kind of shedding is a totally natural process, right? Dogs shed fur. Snakes shed their skins. Even people shed skin and hair (but on a slow enough basis that it’s not actually evident). But people don’t “shed pounds.” If you were shedding pounds of flesh or hair or skin you’d be really frightened and you would know that something was terribly wrong with you.

So why make a big deal out of a “figure of speech” as it were?

Because the words we use matter, and phrases like “shedding pounds” are just evidence of how completely disconnected we are from our bodies.

You and your body are one thing. You are inextricably connected to your body. So how you envision it, how you treat it, and how you think about its processes will affect that connection. So it’s important to think about the words that you use to talk about your body and whether those words add to that connection between body and mind or detract from it.

It makes sense that people find it normal to talk about their bodies in a disconnected manner. When you’re taught that your body is not okay just as it is, not acceptable to your family, to your peers, then your body is not a safe place. When your body is not a safe place, it makes sense to disassociate from that body, to distinguish between “it” and “you” and to make choices about your body that can be harmful.

Similarly, rhetoric like the “war on obesity” and, even worse, the “war on childhood obesity” is so detached from the reality that obesity is not a thing that is separate from people. There is no obesity without obese people, so what does the war on obesity really mean? If it means that the war is with the person’s obesity, but not the person, then it just serves to further this mind-body separation that so many people feel.

So what do we do when so much of the rhetoric we hear supports a disconnect between mind and body?

First, let’s take back our words. Let’s take extra care when we use words to talk about our bodies. Let’s avoid words and phrases that make our bodies a thing that is somehow disconnected from who we are. When we talk about our bodies, we want to do so with love and compassion, because we’re talking about ourselves.

And second, let’s engage in techniques and practices that connect mind and body. Practices like yoga, meditation, or a moving meditation (where you quiet your mind and engage with your sense as you go about your day) are great for reconnecting mind and body.

As always, let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Take a moment to connect with one of your deepest desires. Really connect with that desire right now.

Now, take a moment to think or say aloud: “I deserve ____(that desire)____.”

How did that feel? Did it feel like the truth? Did it feel okay to say that you really deserve one of your deepest desires?

If it felt right, if you felt aligned with that statement, then I am so happy for you. This article may not be for you then.

But if it felt funny, or weird, or wrong, or guilt-inducing to say “I deserve this deep desire” then you should definitely read on.

Most of us think of being deserving from a scarcity perspective. On some level we think, that if we find ourselves deserving, we’re implying that others are not. But feeling that we’re deserving has nothing to do with others not being deserving. Feeling deserving just means that we are willing to honor and take heed of our own needs and desires. When you don’t feel deserving, you create your own self-imposed obstacle to creating positive change and having what you want.

Deciding that you’re deserving can sometimes feel selfish. You may feel like, “Well, if I’m deserving of this, isn’t everybody? Why should I have wonderful food while others go hungry? Why should I love my body and approve of it when so many people hate theirs?”

But thinking this way does not serve anyone. If you eat food that you don’t really like because others are hungry, both you and those hungry folks are miserable, right? If you hate your body because other people don’t know that it’s possible to stop hating theirs, who are you serving? You are only serving your inner critic. You are only serving the belief in scarcity that keeps you afraid to change and follow your desires.

Feeling deserving is not selfish, it is self-empowering. Deciding that you’re deserving of love, or good food, or joyous movement or a better job is self-empowering. When you find yourself worthy of what you want, when you become in alignment with what you want, you have the energy to take care of yourself, of your needs, of your wants. And that energy can change the world for the better. See for yourself how this small mindset shift can create big change.

We meet deadlines at work, race to get the kids to piano lessons, make sure a sick friend has what she needs. We say “yes” to everyone and “no” to no one but ourselves.

But when is it your turn? And if not now, when?

The truth is, if you’re struggling with eating issues and negative body image, those things do not get better when you’re worrying about everyone else. In fact, the more you put yourself last on the list, the more those issues can gnaw at you.

So I’m asking you to put yourself first, right here and now, and join The Empress Club. If you want to heal your relationship with food, heal your relationship with your body, get support from me and from a community of women who are all on the same journey, then it’s time to make the decision and join.

Registration for The Empress Club ends TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH AT MIDNIGHT Eastern. I will not be offering a similar program for at least 6 months.

Now, you’re probably wondering how all of this works. As in, “What exactly do I get as an Empress Club member?” So here’s a breakdown of all that you get to participate in as an Empress Club member.

First, there are the calls. You will get 12 food and body image group coaching sessions in a teleclass form. Each session will be 60-90 minutes long. These classes will be in a workshop style, with a mixture of teaching and Q&A. These are calls where you’ll learn tools to support you in transforming your food and body image issues. And, you’ll get my personal, in-depth coaching on your specific questions. And you’ll learn a lot from the questions and successes of your peers!

Then, there’s membership in the exclusive Empress Club community site. You’ll be granted access to your own members-only protected site where you can get your questions answered by me and my team, share knowledge and inspiration with other members, and access the downloadable audios and other program resources. This is the place to share your experiences, get support, post pictures, network, and so much more!

Plus, we have the bonus Live Event, which I call the Empress Club Coronation. This is a 2-day, private event, where you get your chance to meet the amazing women that you’ve connected with in the Empress Club in person.

Day 1 is a plus size shopping event, where we’ll head to Brooklyn to visit Re/Dress NYC and Lee Lee’s Valise — two wonderful stores dedicated to fabulous plus-size clothes. There, trained stylists will help you create fantastic looks that look great on you. Day 2 is our spa day, where you get to pamper yourself at Spa Castle, an amazing, multi-level spa. We’ll talk body love as we relax and chat in jacuzzis, saunas and whirlpools. Please note: Attendance at the Empress Club Coronation isn’t required, and no new material will be covered. However, it is my personal wish that everyone be able to attend.

www.bodylovewellness.com

Listen to the podcast here:

I’ve had a really strange relationship with time over the last few weeks. I’ve arrived late at parties and events, just missing friends that I was hoping to see. I’ve taken forever to write just a few paragraphs. I tried to get brunch in my neighborhood this weekend and the kitchen was closed everywhere I went. It’s like I’m lagging behind in the beat in the song of my life.

But rather than speed myself up, I’ve decided to embrace this slowness. I’ve decided to see where it’s taking me, and enjoy it as much as possible.

Yesterday, I re-listened to the “How To Feel Good In Your Skin” free teleclass that I did two weeks ago and took myself on the journey of the guided meditation/visualization that I had shared during the class (those of you who listened in know what I’m talking about!). Toward the end of the meditation/visualization, your inner Empress, the powerful, sensual, confident, abundant woman within you, hands you a wrapped present, which you open. When I did the visualization for myself, my Empress gave me a crystal turtle. I found myself a little disappointed with this gift (I guess even in my visualizations, I’m not one for knickknacks). But then I realized that the meaning of this gift was that it was a reminder to see the beauty in slowness.

Truly, slowing down can be so difficult. Whether it’s slowing down during self-care, or slowing down when you eat, or just lessening the things that you commit to, slowing down in our fast-paced world can be the hardest lesson to learn.

But there is so much beauty in slowness. When we go slow, we get to savor our experiences, use all of our senses, and notice what we might not otherwise.

So this week, how about we embrace a bit of slowness? Take a few deep breaths in the middle of your day, just because. Eat dinner tonight as slowly as you can, savoring every bite. When you shower, slowly caress your body, and enjoy every sensation.

Sounds fun but sort of difficult, right? Let me know how it goes!
