(This is an oldie but goodie, but it’s really a goodie! I’ll be back next week with an all new post!)

Until really recently, I had had a strict “no joining gyms” policy. This policy was based upon good solid reason and logic — in the past, I would join a gym, go religiously for a few months, get sick and not go for about a week, and then never go back again. Ever. Plus, I wouldn’t even work out at home because it would remind me of how guilty I felt about not getting to the gym.

I know, it’s crazy. But I know from friends and clients that I’m not the only one who does this.

Once I learned about Health At Every Size and took the pressure off myself about losing weight, not joining a gym was really great for me. I would take long walks, do aerobics or yoga DVD’s, and I would do it pretty regularly.

But lately, I started feeling the pull to join my local Y. They have a pool, daily water aerobics, really new weight and cardio machines, and a generally pleasant, laid back vibe. I took a tour with my friend Girthful Girl and we both loved it. And since joining, I’ve been going about five times a week, mostly to do water aerobics but also to use the elliptical. I absolutely love it, and I feel really good.

So how did I get to this peaceful, happy place with working out and exercising?

Well, there are methods to my madness. So if you’re feeling kind of stuck when it comes to fitness or not sure how to do it without over-exercising/guilting yourself/obsessing about weight loss etc., I’d like to give you a couple of tips how to do it in an emotionally healthy way.

So here are my top five tips on how to exercise without making yourself crazy.

1. Do What You Find Fun. Just because your best friend swears by hot yoga, it doesn’t mean that you have to do it. It doesn’t have to be difficult or unpleasant to be really good for you.

Why? Because if you like it, you’ll want to do it, and if you don’t like it, you won’t want to do it. It’s really that simple. It’s not like phys. ed. class in school, where you had to do whatever the class is doing. If you like dancing around your apartment — fantastic. Great. Do that. If you like water aerobics, find a place that has it and do it. It is worth the money if you like it and it makes you feel good. When you exercise in a way that you actually enjoy, you still get tons of benefits, and it’s SO MUCH EASIER to do because you actually want to do it!

2. Be Open Minded & Try Different Things. Experiment with different kinds of exercise and see what appeals to you. Be willing to try something new and revise your opinions.

Why? Because when you’re open minded, you may find that what was once true for you isn’t true anymore. For example, even if you always thought you had two left feet, you might really enjoy a dance class. Or, even if you always found the weight room intimidating in high school, you may not feel that way now, as an adult. If you’re checking out gyms, try to get a free week or day at different gyms, and see where you feel most comfortable. You don’t have to make a decision right away, and you may be surprised by which place you like the most. (I also really recommend YMCA’s and YMHA’s because they’re usually less “hard selling” than commercial gyms.)

3. Don’t Keep Statistics. I mean it. Don’t track anything about the way you exercise. Don’t track how many minutes of cardio, calories burned, or your weight or your measurements.

Why? You don’t need it, and it can make you crazy. You know when you’ve been working out regularly and when you haven’t. Your body tells you. You notice when your endurance has gotten better when you get less tired walking to the train. You notice when your muscles have gotten stronger when you lift a bag of groceries with less effort. The point of exercise is not to constantly compare (and judge yourself) against a standard from last week or last year or 20 years ago. The point is noticing how your body feels. And if today your body feels tired and you only do a little, that is fantastic too because it means you’re listening.

4. Schedule Your Workouts. Block out time in your schedule for classes you want to take or working out at home. Make that time as sacred as possible by not scheduling anything else during that time. Be realistic about the time you need, including time to stretch, shower, etc.

Why? Exercising really is “me time.” It’s time that you are putting aside, just for you, to make you feel good. Putting your favorite classes or home workouts in your schedule is a signal to yourself that your health, well-being, and personal time is really important. I literally schedule my water aerobics class (and travel time and shower time) into my schedule and don’t schedule clients during that time. I know that no matter how crazy my day is, I have that time blocked out just for me and I can look forward to it.

5. Invest In Workout Clothes, Sneakers, Etc. That Are Right For You, Fit You And Make You Feel Good. When you have sneakers that fit right, clothes that fit, etc., exercising is so much easier and more enjoyable.

Why? It’s really hard to concentrate on exercising when you’re worried that your bathing suit is too tight or your sneakers are worn out. Wear clothes that make you feel good – even put on some makeup if it helps. Truly, it’s better to wear one outfit that you like over and over again, than wear really old clothes that make you feel embarrassed. I notice when I have things that support my workout, (like these prescription goggles that I bought recently) then I’m more likely to workout and really enjoy it.

Alright, hotties, let’s get cookin’! Let me know if you use these tips (and feel free to share your own) in the comments section below or on Facebook!

(This is an oldie but goodie, but it’s really a goodie! I’ll be back next week with an all new post!)

Al Pacino Trying To Keep His Pound Of Flesh as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice

The term “weight loss” must not have the same zing that it used to.

There’s a new euphemism that diet pushers are pushing, and that euphemism is “shedding pounds.”

The real kind of shedding is a totally natural process, right? Dogs shed fur. Snakes shed their skins. Even people shed skin and hair (but on a slow enough basis that it’s not actually evident). But people don’t “shed pounds.” If you were shedding pounds of flesh or hair or skin you’d be really frightened and you would know that something was terribly wrong with you.

So why make a big deal out of a “figure of speech” as it were?

Because the words we use matter, and phrases like “shedding pounds” are just evidence of how completely disconnected we are from our bodies.

You and your body are one thing. You are inextricably connected to your body. So how you envision it, how you treat it, and how you think about its processes will affect that connection. So it’s important to think about the words that you use to talk about your body and whether those words add to that connection between body and mind or detract from it.

It makes sense that people find it normal to talk about their bodies in a disconnected manner. When you’re taught that your body is not okay just as it is, not acceptable to your family, to your peers, then your body is not a safe place. When your body is not a safe place, it makes sense to disassociate from that body, to distinguish between “it” and “you” and to make choices about your body that can be harmful.

Similarly, rhetoric like the “war on obesity” and, even worse, the “war on childhood obesity” is so detached from the reality that obesity is not a thing that is separate from people. There is no obesity without obese people, so what does the war on obesity really mean? If it means that the war is with the person’s obesity, but not the person, then it just serves to further this mind-body separation that so many people feel.

So what do we do when so much of the rhetoric we hear supports a disconnect between mind and body?

First, let’s take back our words. Let’s take extra care when we use words to talk about our bodies. Let’s avoid words and phrases that make our bodies a thing that is somehow disconnected from who we are. When we talk about our bodies, we want to do so with love and compassion, because we’re talking about ourselves.

And second, let’s engage in techniques and practices that connect mind and body. Practices like yoga, meditation, or a moving meditation (where you quiet your mind and engage with your sense as you go about your day) are great for reconnecting mind and body.

As always, let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Take a moment to connect with one of your deepest desires. Really connect with that desire right now.

Now, take a moment to think or say aloud: “I deserve ____(that desire)____.”

How did that feel? Did it feel like the truth? Did it feel okay to say that you really deserve one of your deepest desires?

If it felt right, if you felt aligned with that statement, then I am so happy for you. This article may not be for you then.

But if it felt funny, or weird, or wrong, or guilt-inducing to say “I deserve this deep desire” then you should definitely read on.

Most of us think of being deserving from a scarcity perspective. On some level we think, that if we find ourselves deserving, we’re implying that others are not. But feeling that we’re deserving has nothing to do with others not being deserving. Feeling deserving just means that we are willing to honor and take heed of our own needs and desires. When you don’t feel deserving, you create your own self-imposed obstacle to creating positive change and having what you want.

Deciding that you’re deserving can sometimes feel selfish. You may feel like, “Well, if I’m deserving of this, isn’t everybody? Why should I have wonderful food while others go hungry? Why should I love my body and approve of it when so many people hate theirs?”

But thinking this way does not serve anyone. If you eat food that you don’t really like because others are hungry, both you and those hungry folks are miserable, right? If you hate your body because other people don’t know that it’s possible to stop hating theirs, who are you serving? You are only serving your inner critic. You are only serving the belief in scarcity that keeps you afraid to change and follow your desires.

Feeling deserving is not selfish, it is self-empowering. Deciding that you’re deserving of love, or good food, or joyous movement or a better job is self-empowering. When you find yourself worthy of what you want, when you become in alignment with what you want, you have the energy to take care of yourself, of your needs, of your wants. And that energy can change the world for the better. See for yourself how this small mindset shift can create big change.

The desire to be thin is so ingrained in our culture (thanks, $58.6 billion diet industry) that we don’t often ask the question — Why do you want to be thin? But what does being thin really mean? What would being thin mean to you?

People often talk about thinness and the desire for thinness as a given. We are taught to equate thinness with health, attractiveness, ease of dating, etc. We’re taught that being thin is a worthy goal, the holy grail of a life well-lived.

So I want to break apart this thinness myth right now. I want to look at the reality of our collective desire to be thinner, how we’re taught to achieve it, and how using a Health At Every Size approach (the one I use with my clients) can help you achieve the desires underpinning your thinness desires.

Better Health

More and more evidence is showing that the supposed detrimental health effects of being fat are actually the result of dieting and the incredible strain that dieting puts on the body. Dieting wreaks havoc on the body, affecting everything from your immune system, to your cardiovascular system, to your mental health.

Participants in studies of the Health At Every Size approach, which includes intuitive eating skills, appropriate body movement, and body acceptance, actually show more long term improvement in health indicators, such as decreased LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, more consistent activity levels, and feeling empowered and less depressed.

More Attractive

A 2004 study of chronic dieters found that they had lower self esteem and a lower appearance evaluation than non-dieters. In other words, even if temporary thinness is achieved with dieting, it doesn’t mean that the dieter feels any more attractive.

On the other hand, participants in HAES programs learn to love and accept their bodies, increasing their self esteem and acknowledgement of their attractiveness. When you feel attractive, others respond to it, and see you as attractive.

More Active

For dieters, activity is often connected with weight loss. The focus is not on joyful movement of your body, but on calories burned. This focus on activity as a means to an end often leads to abandonment of exercise programs when desired results aren’t achieved, or overexercising, which can result in injuries and other problems.

With the HAES approach, participants are encouraged to find movement that they like. Because it’s enjoyable, they’re automatically encouraged to continue. Linda Bacon’s study has borne this out.

Live Longer

A recent study found that people who lost 15% or more of their body weight had an increased risk of death compared to people of the same size who didn’t lose weight. Our common knowledge on this topic is completely off base. Studies indicate that fat people live longer than thin people.

HAES does not involve this intentional manipulation of body weight, and therefore doesn’t create these detrimental effects.

Eating Better or Healthier

It all depends on your conception of healthy eating. Dieting often involves a disconnection from your body, and an implicit agreement to adhere to the dictates of the diet no matter what sort of cues your body gives you. So while you may be eating more reasonable portions and more vegetables you’re also learning to ignore your body’s signals, which usually leads to some bingeing behavior when your body calls bullshit. Also, most diets involve some low-fat or low-cal processed foods which are full of chemicals that probably should not be ingested by anyone.

With HAES, you learn about real nutrition, you eat real food, you reconnect with your body, you learn how to listen to its cues and feed it in a way that makes sense for you. You learn to trust yourself and your body. You have bigger portions when you need them and smaller portions when you need them. You let go of restrictions in a new way, so that food loses its power and becomes what it is — nutrition, fuel, pleasure.

Easier To Find Clothes

It is true that, if you diet down to a size 14 or under, it is easier to find and buy clothes. However, because diets don’t work in the long term (I’m sorry, but they really don’t), dieting leads to size fluctuation, which means that you end up with a wardrobe of lots of different sizes, costing you more money, time, and aggravation.

It’s true that it’s still harder to buy plus-sized clothes, mainly because so many retailers are online only. However, learning to trust your body raises your chances for staying a consistent size, which means that those pants that you loved and bought two years ago may still fit you for a while. Plus, plus-sized fashion has come a loooong way in recent years.

Easier To Date

It’s true that it may be easier to date when you’re a smaller size. I don’t know the statistics, but it may be true. But, again, because weight loss via dieting is temporary, you may be feeling the stress of trying to stay thin to stay with a particular partner. And because dieting has a negative impact on body image and feeling attractive, you might not be enjoying dating so much anyway.

With HAES, you learn to trust and love your body. You appreciate it, you approve of it, you come to terms with your imperfections, and you locate and connect with your attractiveness. When you feel good in your body, you feel more attractive, and the more attractive you feel, the easier it is to date and really enjoy yourself.

Less Judgment By Others

It’s true that society judges fat dieters as doing the right thing by “doing something” about their weight. However, society is wrong. Plus, dieting to improve other people’s judgment of you is a detrimental, approval-seeking behavior. Over-emphasis on others’ opinions of you is a key factor in low self-esteem.

When you operate from a HAES perspective, you become empowered. Your self-esteem stabilizes, because you provide your own approval of yourself. Other people’s judgments of you based on your size become less important to you.

Less Discrimination/ Reaping The Benefits Of Thin Privilege

It’s true. Fat people are discriminated against and it’s been getting worse in the last few years. But dieting down to temporary thinness to avoid discrimination is not the answer. Discrimination based on your size is not okay.

The more people adopt a HAES approach, the more we will have empowered people of all shapes and sizes who won’t find discrimination acceptable. The more that we are educated on the realities of fatness, the more we’ll be able to effect change.

You have bi[...]</itunes:summary>

We are bombarded with messages about our bodies and our health every day. We’re told to diet, no matter what that might do to our bodies. We’re told to wear clothes that “look slimming” no matter what that might do to our self esteem. We’re told to wait to be thinner before we do what we want, no matter what that might do to our lives.

And yet, there are lots of us who are working to change the status quo. Whether we do it through activism, or art, or medical research, or just finding ways to live our lives outside the boundaries that we’re supposed to accept, we are part of something bigger than ourselves. It is a revolution in the truest sense.

So I’ve assembled a group of amazing women who are at the forefront of this revolution for this free telesummit. We’re going to explore everything from plus-sized fatshion, to bigger bodies in art, to the science of Health At Every Size.

We’ve got Dr. Linda Bacon talking about the science of Health At Every Size (SM), we’ve got Marilyn Wann talking activism, we’ve got IGIGI founder Yuliya Raquel talking fatshion and that’s just the beginning. You can see the full schedule here.

When you register, you’ll get free access to all of the interviews and the recordings, and you’ll have the opportunity to get your questions answered by our panel.

If you know you want in, just click here to register for free.

I can’t wait to see you there!

I was wallowing happily in Birthday Land this week and didn’t get around to writing a new post. So this is a slightly edited “oldie but goodie.” I hope you enjoy it!

Since I am essentially an advice columnist (and someone who coaches and counsels for a living), I am about to give away what amounts to state secrets.

The big secret is — You can trust yourself.

When I work with my clients as they transition from dieting and self hatred to intuitive eating and body love, one of the biggest parts of the journey is supporting them in learning to trust themselves.

Sometimes, that first act of self-trust is enrolling in one my programs. You have to decide to trust your gut and value yourself enough to make the commitment to work with me.

Similarly, you found this blog, and perhaps certain of our weekly encounters really resonated with you and you took them to heart. Perhaps you practiced some of the tips, even if they felt a little silly at first. You did that because some part of you – that part that’s connected to the deep knowing that we all have as humans – told you that trying that tip was going to be healing in some way.

A big part of the work that I do involves healing and transforming your connection to your body. I do this in a number of different ways. In this blog, we’ve used mainly a mind-centered approach towards changing your thoughts about your body. This mind-centered approach can be very healing, especially for mind-centered people who like to read blogs!

Another pathway of change that you can employ is starting to love your body through your senses. This body-centered approach is also very healing, as you learn to slow down and savor your body through feeling into your senses.

Many times when we talk about the senses, we think mainly of the 5 senses — sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Exploring and savoring each of these senses is a great practice for getting in touch with your body, but there is also a 6th sense, which is our intuition and our connection with the Universe.

The sixth sense, I believe, ties together all of our senses. It is also more than that, as it connects us with knowledge that we don’t think we have. This 6th sense allows us to know, on a deep level, when something is right and something is not right.

You know when you’re hungry or full. You know when you’re tired or angry or annoyed. You know when someone is trying to convince you of something that isn’t for you. You know what you need and what you don’t. Learning to trust that knowledge is the essence of embracing the 6th sense.

We’ve all learned to heap logic atop our intuitions. Intuition has been discredited for years. Don’t make the mistake of discrediting your intuition. Listen to it, and it will begin to speak louder; just give it time. When you can really hear your intuitive sense, you will increasingly feel as though you’ve entered into the flow of your life.

Your practice this week is to connect with your sixth sense. Pay attention to your hunches. Notice what your inner voice says. Notice what your typical reaction to that voice is. Is it respect or do you discredit it? Try following a hunch and see where it leads you. The more you learn to trust your intuition, the more you will learn to trust yourself.

I don’t get it. I really don’t.

A few years ago, I joined a community of women who were committed to revolutionizing what it means to be a woman in this world. They are some of the brightest, most interesting, most accomplished women I have ever met. Give them a challenge, whether it’s starting a super-successful company or managing multiple lovers, and they do it, with minimal strife.

And yet, they are so steeped in diet culture that they don’t even bother to notice it. They rant about weight gained, how fat (read: unattractive) they are, the diets they’re on, etc. It’s completely endless.

Most of my connection to these women, at this point, is via an online community, and I used to conserve my sanity points by ignoring any posts that seemed weight-related, and sometimes by ignoring this online community altogether.

I had such high hopes for this group of women. I had such a belief that if anyone could revolutionize the way women think and feel about their bodies, they would. And I thought that that community would be a safe space, relatively free of weight oppression.

The fact that I was so wrong is deeply upsetting.

And yet, it also tells me a deep truth about those of us who are really committed to ending size-based oppression. It tells me that what we’re doing is really, really revolutionary. It takes outlandishly tremendous guts to admit, aloud, that the Emperor Has No Clothes (probably because he wears a 4x, but I digress).

So why am I sharing this with you? Because I want you to know that, even in my fat positive little bubble, I encounter people all the time who make me feel like I’m banging my head against the wall. And I also want to remind you that you are all truly revolutionaries, figuring things out as you go, living without the net of thin privilege, and that to know you and connect with you is my deepest privilege.

Also, sometimes we just need to rant about this crap. So this week, let’s rant, shall we? Comment about fat oppression, diet culture, and life in general. Let’s dive into the muck and get it out of our systems.
